SIRS and MODS can sound abstract until you are nursing a patient with them. This webinar makes them practical.
You’ll learn how systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is defined, the imbalance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators behind it, and the infectious and non-infectious insults that can trigger it, such as pancreatitis, trauma, burns, heatstroke and sepsis. You’ll then cover the criteria used to diagnose SIRS in dogs and cats (temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, white cell count and band neutrophils) and how cats often present differently from dogs.
Next comes multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS): how uncontrolled SIRS leads to it through decreased oxygen delivery and microthrombi, and its high mortality. You’ll work through the seven organ systems involved one by one, respiratory, cardiovascular, CNS, gastrointestinal, kidneys, liver, and coagulation and the endothelium, with what goes wrong in each and what the nurse should monitor.
