Scrubbing in is the first step in becoming a sterile assistant in theatre. This webinar explains the aims of scrubbing in, how to map out the hands and arms so no surface is missed, and how to carry out a pre-scrub. It compares the three main scrub techniques: the timed method, the stroke or count method, and the waterless method using an alcohol-based hand rub.
From there it moves through drying, gowning, and closed and open gloving. It finishes by looking at which parts of a gowned and gloved person are actually sterile, what makes up the sterile field, and how to recognise and respond when the sterile field is broken.
Presented by Tess Richardson at the 2024 ACVN Nurse Conference (Surgical stream).
