This webinar covers the principles of ventilation, including the respiratory centre, the role of carbon dioxide in driving respiration, V/Q mismatch and the reasons a patient may need to be ventilated. It introduces volume and pressure modes, scalar and loop waveforms, and the common terms you’ll see on a ventilator.
The rest of the session focuses on nursing care of the ventilated patient: hand hygiene, eye and mouth care, positioning and physiotherapy, ET tube suction and cuff care, bladder and bowel care, lines and drains, nutrition and arterial lines. It finishes with the risks of ventilation, including the effects on the cardiovascular system, ventilator induced lung injury, and how to prevent ventilator associated pneumonia.
Presented by Nicola Wilkinson at the 2025 ACVN Nurse Conference (Critical Care stream).
