Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) makes every anaesthetic higher risk. This webinar explains what BOAS is, the physical features and clinical signs to look for, and the four BOAS stages. It covers what surgery aims to achieve (open nares, a trimmed soft palate, removal of everted laryngeal saccules and partial removal of enlarged tonsils) and the risks and prognosis.
The nursing focus is on preparing the patient and the equipment, drug choices for brachycephalic patients, induction and intubation, maintenance, and recovery, which is when these patients are most at risk.
Presented by Jess Male at the 2024 ACVN Nurse Conference (Surgical stream).
Includes the full recording (1 hour 15 minutes), the presentation slides as a PDF, and a quiz. Pass the quiz to receive a certificate worth 1 AVNAT point.
