This webinar starts with what makes a bird a bird and how to prepare for expected and unexpected avian patients, including phone triage. It covers safe handling, how to house birds when you don’t have avian-specific kennels, materials to avoid, creative use of everyday clinic items, and the lighting, heating and feeding needs of hospitalised birds.
The second half covers avian anaesthesia: ASA grading, premedication, air sacs and pneumatic bones, mask induction, intubation with uncuffed tubes, and monitoring heart rate, respiration, temperature and reflexes. It finishes with common bird conditions and diseases such as PBFD, psittacosis and avian influenza.
Presented by Adam Gregory at the 2025 ACVN Nurse Conference (Exotics and Wildlife stream).
Includes the full recording (1 hour 8 minutes), the presentation slides as a PDF, and a quiz. Pass the quiz to receive a certificate worth 1 AVNAT point.
