A chocolate call needs a fast, confident answer. This webinar gives you the numbers and the nursing plan so you can give one.
You’ll learn what chocolate toxicity is: the methylxanthines theobromine and caffeine, how theobromine acts on adenosine receptors, and why dark chocolate, cocoa and baking chocolate are the most dangerous. You’ll cover when cases happen, the toxic doses from mild signs at 20 mg/kg to seizures at 60 mg/kg, and a 2021 review of 156 dogs that ate chocolate.
You’ll then work through initial treatment: triage and stabilisation, calculating the theobromine dose, decontamination with emesis or gastric lavage, and drugs including activated charcoal, apomorphine, methocarbamol, lactulose, lignocaine and beta-blockers. The webinar finishes with nursing care, including IV fluids, urinary catheterisation to stop reabsorption from the bladder, active cooling, ECG and blood pressure monitoring, care of seizure patients, other medications, and why toxicity is rare in cats.
