Long procedures such as orthopaedic surgery, exploratory laparotomy, bowel resection and complex soft tissue surgery put extra demands on the patient and on the nurse monitoring them. This webinar covers planning before a long surgery, including glucose checks, emptying the bladder or placing a urinary catheter, warming, padding and positioning.
It then covers the peri-operative care these patients need: adjusting fluid rates as metabolism slows, recognising fluid overload, managing hypotension, repeat antibiotics and analgesia, the anaesthetic machine, and eye and mouth care. It finishes with recovery, the riskiest period of anaesthesia, including warming, feeding and pain relief.
Presented by Nicola Wilkinson at the 2024 ACVN Nurse Conference (Surgical stream).
