This webinar starts with the anatomy of the pleura and pleural space, and how negative pressure in the pleural space is created and maintained. It then covers the types of pleural disease: pleural effusions, including pyothorax, chylothorax and haemothorax, transudates and modified transudates, and open, closed and tension pneumothorax, with pulmonary oedema for comparison.
It explains how to recognise pleural disease from the clinical signs and lung sounds, the initial treatment, and the equipment and steps for thoracocentesis and chest tube placement. It finishes with nursing care of the patient with a chest tube, including monitoring and manual or continuous evacuation.
Presented by Travis Bruns at the 2025 ACVN Nurse Conference (Critical Care stream).
