This webinar covers the nursing side of eye surgery, starting with eye anatomy and triaging ocular emergencies. It explains what raises intraocular pressure and how to avoid it in the perioperative period, from blood draws and collars to positioning, preoxygenation and intubation, and how corneal pain differs between superficial and deep ulcers.
It then works through drug choices for premedication and induction, clipping and surgical prep of the eye with dilute iodine, local blocks and their risks, and recognising and treating the oculocardiac reflex. It finishes with managing diabetic patients through surgery and post-operative care.
Presented by Kimberley Litster at the 2025 ACVN Nurse Conference (Surgical stream).
