This webinar starts with the anatomy and physiology of the brain, including the skull, meninges, brain stem and cerebrospinal fluid, then explains the Monro-Kellie doctrine and how rising intracranial pressure reduces cerebral perfusion pressure. It covers blunt and penetrating head injuries, first aid advice for clients, triage, and what happens once the patient reaches the crash table: vascular access, oxygen, analgesia, fluids, hypertonic saline and mannitol, and the Modified Glasgow Coma Score.
It then works through monitoring and complications, including hypercapnia, non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, seizures and blood glucose, and the things to avoid in a TBI patient. It finishes with prognosis and the case of Lincoln, a puppy who recovered from a dog bite to the head.
Presented by Mandy Helton at the 2025 ACVN Nurse Conference (Critical Care stream).
