This webinar starts with why we place IV catheters and the factors that affect the choice of catheter and site, from the patient’s health status and behaviour to the fluid rate needed and staff experience. It covers the common catheter sites in dogs and cats, the types of catheter (over the needle, through the needle, butterfly and peel away), and how gauge and length affect flow.
It then steps through placing a peripheral catheter: equipment, clipping, cleaning, placement, flushing, taping and bandaging, with a video to critique. It finishes with catheter maintenance, when to remove a catheter, and complications such as infection, phlebitis, extravasation, oedema, thrombosis and air embolism.
Presented by Nicola Wilcock as part of the ACVN webinar series.
Includes the full recording (49 minutes), the presentation slides as a PDF, and a quiz. Pass the quiz to receive a certificate worth 1 AVNAT point.
