This webinar defines blood pressure, the normal systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressures, and the basic physiology linking cardiac output, heart rate, stroke volume and vascular resistance. It explains the factors that lower heart rate, stroke volume and blood pressure, including hypothermia, hypovolaemia, hypoxia, sepsis, shock and common anaesthetic drugs.
It then works through two case studies, a dog that becomes hypotensive under anaesthesia for cruciate surgery and a Cavalier with a haemabdomen and a heart murmur, deciding whether the reading is real, what is causing it and how to correct it. It finishes with critical illness related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI) as a cause of hypotension that doesn’t respond to fluids or vasopressors.
Presented by Jess Male and Nicola Wilkinson as part of the ACVN webinar series.
