Weight loss clinics are one of the most rewarding things a nurse can run, and one of the easiest to get wrong. This webinar gives you the nutrition, the maths and the client strategies to make them work.
You’ll start with the nutritional needs of the overweight patient: a diet high in protein, lower in fat and higher in fibre or moisture. You’ll learn how to check whether a food provides enough protein using daily protein requirements, DER factors for weight loss and the guaranteed analysis, how prescription and over-the-counter weight loss diets compare, and what label terms such as ‘light’ and ‘reduced’ really mean. You’ll then calculate RER, DER and the volume to feed for a cat.
The second half covers running weight loss clinics: evaluating the patient, the client and the current diet, designing a plan with ideal body weight, calorie restriction, food selection, treat allowance, an activity plan and follow-up, and monitoring progress with graphs, measurements, photos and incentives. It finishes with practical solutions to common setbacks such as begging, inability to exercise, multipet households, weight loss plateaus, client guilt and non-compliant household members.
