Anticoagulant, cholecalciferol, bromethalin, zinc phosphide or 1080: each rodenticide needs a different response. This webinar helps you know which is which.
You’ll start with anticoagulant rodenticides, how they prevent the hepatic recycling of vitamin K1 and cause a deficiency of clotting factors II, VII, IX and X, how first generation products such as warfarin compare with second generation products such as brodifacoum, and the haemorrhagic signs they cause. You’ll also cover the non-anticoagulant rodenticides, vitamin D based cholecalciferol, the neurotoxin bromethalin and zinc phosphide, and their clinical signs.
The diagnostics section covers coagulation tests, with a prolonged prothrombin time (PT) as the key indicator of anticoagulant toxicity. You’ll then move through first aid advice, including the risk of phosphine gas to people, preparedness, treatment with vitamin K, blood products and decontamination, and nursing care. The webinar finishes with 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate): how it interrupts the Krebs cycle, its clinical signs, the bite risk these patients pose, first aid and further treatment.
