Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is a term for conditions affecting the bladder and urethra, and the blocked male cat is one of its most urgent presentations. This webinar covers the causes and risk factors for FLUTD, the clinical signs to ask about, and how to triage a blocked cat with the focus on the cardiovascular system. It then works through the emergency diagnostics and what the blood results mean, including lactate, hyperkalaemia and its ECG changes, and post-renal azotaemia.
Treatment covers fluid therapy, managing hyperkalaemia, and stabilising the patient before anaesthesia and urinary catheter placement. It finishes with a case showing how the cat is unblocked and catheterised, and the nursing care that follows, including ins and outs, post-obstructive diuresis, electrolyte monitoring, analgesia and keeping the patient stress free.
Presented by Emma Holder as part of the ACVN 2025 webinar series.
