Anaemia is a fall in red blood cell count, and with it the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. This webinar covers how red blood cells are produced, the three ways anaemia occurs (haemorrhage, haemolysis and decreased production), the history and physical exam findings to look for, and how to run and read a PCV/TS. It then works through common causes, including internal and external haemorrhage, toxins, and immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia and thrombocytopenia (IMHA and IMTP).
The second half covers hospital nursing care and transfusion medicine: the blood products available and what each contains, deciding when to transfuse, canine and feline blood types, preparing for a transfusion, monitoring during it, and what to do if a reaction occurs.
Presented by Emma Holder as part of the ACVN 2025 webinar series.
Includes the full recording (1 hour 2 minutes), the presentation slides as a PDF, and a quiz. Pass the quiz to receive a certificate worth 1 AVNAT point.
