Hydrocephalus is a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain ventricles that puts pressure on brain tissue. This webinar explains what CSF is and what it does, the Monro-Kellie doctrine, how CSF can build up, and the neurological signs to look for. It compares congenital and acquired hydrocephalus, including the toy breeds most often affected.
It then covers diagnosis with CT and MRI, CSF collection, and the anaesthetic and recovery considerations for patients with raised intracranial pressure, including Cushing’s reflex. It finishes with medical treatment, ventriculoperitoneal shunts and a case study of a young Chihuahua.
Presented by Emma Holder as part of the ACVN 2025 webinar series.
