This webinar reviews the anatomy of the respiratory tract, from the nasal cavity and larynx to the alveoli and pleural space. It explains how ventilation works, including negative intrathoracic pressure, pulmonary compliance and surfactant, tidal and minute volume, and dead space, then covers gas exchange, oxygen transport and the ventilation-perfusion ratio.
It also looks at panting and thermal exchange, how breathing is controlled, and how the pulmonary circulation responds to low oxygen. It finishes with common respiratory disorders, including pneumothorax, atelectasis, pneumonia and upper airway disease, and the main differences in avian respiration.
Presented by Travis Bruns as part of the ACVN 2025 webinar series.
Includes the full recording (1 hour 3 minutes), the presentation slides as a PDF, and a quiz. Pass the quiz to receive a certificate worth 1 AVNAT point.
