This webinar starts with how normal muscle works: fibre types, how the nerve signal reaches the muscle, the role of calcium, actin and myosin, and the energy systems muscles use for short bursts and for endurance. It then looks at what goes wrong in myopathies, from inherited conditions such as Labrador retriever myopathy and canine myotonia to acquired ones including toxoplasmosis, masticatory myositis and diabetic myopathy.
It covers rhabdomyolysis and the effects of snake bite on muscle, including cola-coloured urine, potassium and CK monitoring, and the key nursing considerations for any myopathy patient. It finishes with a case study on malignant hyperthermia: what causes it, the trigger agents to avoid, how to recognise it under anaesthesia and how it is managed.
Presented by Dr Kerrie Tessier as part of the ACVN 2025 webinar series.
