This webinar starts with a review of vascular physiology, from Starling’s original principle of hydrostatic and oncotic forces to the revised hypothesis that takes the endothelial glycocalyx layer (EGL) into account. It covers what the EGL is made of and its main roles as a sieve, antioxidant, regulator of permeability, inflammation and coagulation, and transducer of shear stress.
It then looks at what damages the EGL, what happens when it is damaged, and how the way IV fluid therapy is delivered can protect or harm it. It finishes with practical steps to preserve and restore the EGL, including cannula size, fluid type, temperature and volume, vasopressors in sepsis, albumin and glucose control.
Presented by Jess Male at the 2023 ACVN Nurse Conference.
