This webinar covers paralysis ticks in Australia: the three species, where they are found and when cases peak, and how holocyclotoxin blocks nerve transmission at the neuromuscular junction to cause an ascending flaccid paralysis. It works through the clinical signs, from a change in voice and hind limb weakness to aspiration pneumonia and left-sided congestive heart failure, and how the tick grading scale is used.
It then covers triage, the tick search and tick removal, oxygen therapy, sedation, giving and monitoring tick antiserum, and the nursing care of paralysed and ventilated patients. It finishes with tick prevention and the case of Pearl, a poodle cross with grade 4D tick paralysis treated with high flow nasal oxygen.
Presented by Kym Salter and Ann Garcia at the 2023 ACVN Nurse Conference.
