You can have cleaning without disinfection, but you cannot have disinfection without cleaning. This webinar explains the difference between cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation, the three stages of the cleaning and disinfection process, and why mechanical cleaning is the most important step. It compares cleaning wipe options and covers what disinfectants need to work: direct contact, the correct dilution and the correct contact time.
It then uses the Spaulding classification to decide what level of decontamination an item needs, and works through the main disinfectant groups, from QACs, alcohol and bleach to aldehydes, peroxygen compounds and halogenated tertiary amines. It finishes with the rules for decanting and labelling disinfectants safely.
