A pathogen on its own does not make an infection. This webinar explains the chain of infection, from entering the body to multiplying to an infective dose and causing a response, and how virulence and host defences affect the outcome. It then covers how infection control breaks the chain, including writing infection control steps into every SOP and applying standard precautions with every patient, every time.
It explains when transmission based precautions are needed, such as for patients with a transmissible infection or lowered immunity, and the modes of entry pathogens use. It finishes by working through contact, common vehicle, airborne and vector transmission, with practical examples including ringworm, Hendra virus and heartworm.
Presented by Harrie Phillips as part of the ACVN webinar series.
