Constant rate infusions keep a drug at a steady level in the blood, and it is often the nurse’s job to calculate and run them. This webinar explains what a CRI is, when CRIs are used, from analgesia and blood pressure support to insulin and nutrition, and the different ways to make one up: undiluted, added to the patient’s IV fluids, or run separately so the rate can be adjusted.
It then works step by step through a metoclopramide CRI for a dog after foreign body surgery, first undiluted in a syringe pump and then added to a bag of IV fluids. It finishes with how to prepare and label the fluid bag so the drug rate is not changed by mistake.
