The first part of this two-part series looks at anaesthesia for gastric dilation volvulus (GDV) and shock. For GDV it covers what happens to the stomach and the rest of the body, diagnosis and decompression, stabilisation before anaesthesia, and the anaesthetic risks of arrhythmias, electrolyte imbalances, hypotension and hypoventilation. It then works through drug choices, fluid therapy and IV access, gastropexy techniques, monitoring for complications such as SIRS and DIC, and recovery, including early nutrition.
The second half defines shock and covers its causes, clinical signs and types: hypovolaemic, distributive, cardiogenic, anaphylactic and obstructive. It finishes with how to manage shock under anaesthesia and a case study of a Bernese Mountain Dog with a GDV.
