Megaoesophagus is a dilated, floppy oesophagus that can’t move food down to the stomach, leading to regurgitation, weight loss and aspiration pneumonia. This webinar covers congenital and acquired causes, how to tell regurgitation from vomiting, and the diagnostic approach, including conscious thoracic radiographs, blood tests for myasthenia gravis and hypoadrenocorticism, and fluoroscopy.
The rest of the webinar focuses on nursing care: upright feeding, food texture and meal frequency, managing water, PEG tubes, in-hospital monitoring, sedation precautions, medications and charting. It finishes with discharge planning, client communication, quality of life and what the research says about survival.
Presented by Dr Olga Lynn as part of the ACVN 2025 webinar series.
Includes the full recording (58 minutes), the presentation slides as a PDF, and a quiz. Pass the quiz to receive a certificate worth 1 AVNAT point.
