Anaphylaxis is a systemic, immediate hypersensitivity reaction that can quickly lead to shock. This webinar explains the immunology behind it, from IgE and mast cell degranulation to histamine, leukotrienes and platelet activation factor, and why it causes vasodilatory shock. It compares the shock organs in dogs and cats and covers common causes, including insect stings, vaccines, ophthalmic ointments in cats, blood products, morphine and mast cell tumours.
It then moves to triage and assessment, including AFAST findings, expected vital signs and bloodwork, and initial stabilisation. It finishes with treatment options, nursing care, complications and prognosis.
Presented by Mandy Helton as part of the ACVN 2025 webinar series.
