This webinar looks at how fractures happen, how they heal and why some don’t. It covers the forces acting on bone, the main fracture types including comminuted, open and Salter Harris (physeal) fractures, and how to describe a fracture by soft tissue disruption, cortical disruption, location and displacement.
It explains direct and indirect bone healing, absolute and relative stability, load sharing, the fracture assessment score and the four A’s for assessing post-op radiographs. It finishes with non-union and malunion, nursing reminders for radiology, patient prep and discharge, and a case study of a distal radius and ulna repair.
Presented by Teri Raffel Kleist at the 2025 ACVN Nurse Conference (Surgical stream).
Includes the full recording (54 minutes), the presentation slides as a PDF, and a quiz. Pass the quiz to receive a certificate worth 1 AVNAT point.
