Lab results are only as good as the samples sent for testing. This webinar explains quality assurance and the pre-analytical variables nurses can control, then works through blood collection: the order of draw for vacutainer and syringe collection, and the tubes used for coagulation, chemistry and serology, and haematology. For each tube it covers the additive, how it works, how to fill and mix it, and how to store it.
It also covers serum and plasma, clotting and centrifuging times, and the artefacts of icterus, lipaemia and haemolysis. It finishes with collecting and storing urine and faecal samples, including when a urine sample needs to come from cystocentesis.
Presented by Anneka Pierzga as part of the ACVN webinar series.
