Gut stasis is one of the most common diseases seen in rabbits. This webinar explains what gut stasis is, why rabbits as hind gut fermenters rely on constant gut movement, and the clinical signs to look for, including changes in faecal output and what caecotropes can tell you. It looks at the underlying causes, with case examples of rabbits that stopped eating because of dental disease, injury, urolithiasis and vestibular disease.
It then covers diagnosis, treatment with warmed fluids, support feeding and pain relief, and the nurse’s role: a warm, dark and quiet ward, comfortable bedding, gentle abdominal massage and plenty of hay and vegetables. It finishes on the key message that faeces are the best sign a rabbit is improving.
