Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that affects every body system. This webinar explains what heat stroke is, the difference between classical and exertional heat stroke, and the patient and environmental factors that put dogs at risk. It works through the clinical signs, from red mucous membranes and tachypnoea to CNS signs, DIC, muscle breakdown and cardiac arrhythmias.
It then covers phone triage and first aid advice for owners, active cooling and supportive care in the clinic, diagnosis and lab findings, treatment, and monitoring for complications over the next 24 to 48 hours. It finishes with prevention advice nurses can give clients.
Presented by Kayleigh Williams and Ann Garcia at the 2023 ACVN Nurse Conference.
