This webinar introduces rural practice for nurses who have not worked with farming clients before. It covers the types of clinics and farms you may deal with, from production and intensive enterprises to hobby farms, how farming clients differ from companion animal clients, and the economic pressures that shape their decisions. It shares practical tips for managing farming clients, including honesty, seeking help, handling large drug orders and trusting the farmer on urgency.
It then runs through basic terminology and equipment for cattle, sheep, alpacas and goats, with a short quiz. It finishes with how to schedule vets on the road: triaging emergencies, estimating how long jobs will take, checking a farm is safe to work on, allowing for travel time and planning an efficient route, using a worked scheduling scenario.
Presented by Tess Richardson at the 2023 ACVN Nurse Conference.
