This webinar takes you through both halves of fluid therapy: how much to give, and what to give.
Using the case of ‘Squiggle’, a vomiting 11-year-old Devon Rex, you’ll build a fluid plan step by step. You’ll cover the total fluid requirement (TFR) as maintenance plus fluid deficit plus ongoing losses, the maintenance formulas and rules of thumb for cats and dogs, three ways to estimate a fluid deficit (dehydration assessment, PCV and weight change), and how to estimate and measure ongoing losses. You’ll then replace two thirds of an acute deficit in the first 12 hours and turn the plan into hourly rates.
The second half compares crystalloids and colloids. You’ll learn about hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic crystalloids, with examples and when each should and should not be used, then the types of colloids (dextrans, hydroxyethyl starch, gelatins and blood products), the concerns about synthetic colloids and when colloids may still be used.
