Knowing when to type, when to crossmatch and which method to use makes transfusions safer. This webinar covers all three.
You’ll start with immunohaematology and the difference between antigens, found on the surface of red blood cells, and antibodies, found in the patient’s plasma. You’ll learn about blood typing, including the human ABO system, feline A, B, AB and Mik types and canine DEA types, why cats must always be typed and why a dog’s first transfusion is often called ‘free’. You’ll then cover major and minor crossmatching and the immunologic and non-immunologic, acute and delayed transfusion reactions that testing helps prevent.
You’ll also learn when to blood type and when to crossmatch, including the AVHTM recommendations for previously transfused dogs and cats, and compare three crossmatching methods: the laboratory tube agglutination method, gel column agglutination and immunochromatographic strip tests. The webinar finishes with how to choose the method that suits your clinic.
