Whether the horse goes home on medical management or heads to surgery, the nurse is part of every colic case. This webinar walks you through all of it.
You’ll learn how colic is defined and the clinical signs to watch for, including an elevated TPR, abnormal mucous membranes, rolling, pawing, flank watching, standing quietly and inappetence. You’ll then work through the colic work-up and the equipment a nurse needs: TPR, bloodwork, rectal examination, nasogastric intubation, ultrasound and abdominocentesis, along with where to examine a safe or unsafe horse.
The webinar describes the main types of colic: large colon volvulus, left and right dorsal displacement, impaction, parasitic colic, strangulating lipoma, gastric ulcers and small intestinal intussusception. It then covers medical management (fluids, gastroprotectants, antibiotics, analgesics, sedation and probiotics), surgical intervention and the surgical and enterotomy set-up, and finishes with complications: adhesions, ileus, gastric reflux, incisional infection, endotoxaemic shock and jugular thrombophlebitis.
