Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a serious secondary syndrome that often ends in death. This webinar recaps primary and secondary haemostasis, the coagulation cascade and fibrinolysis, then looks at inflammation, SIRS and sepsis, and why tissue factor is thought to drive DIC in inflammatory patients.
It explains the non-overt (hypercoagulable) and overt stages of DIC, the signs of each and how they are diagnosed, including manual platelet counts and schistocytes on a blood smear. It finishes with treatment and nursing care: addressing the underlying cause, plasma and fresh whole blood transfusions, gentle handling, oxygen therapy and close monitoring.
Presented by Carina Sellwood as part of the ACVN webinar series.
