Hypotension reduces oxygen delivery to the tissues and is common in both anaesthetised and critically ill patients. This webinar explains what blood pressure and hypotension are, normal values in dogs and cats, and how to measure blood pressure with oscillometric, Doppler and invasive monitoring, including how cuff size and position affect the reading. It then covers the determinants of blood pressure, the effects of common anaesthetic drugs, and the receptor pharmacology behind the drugs used to treat it.
It works through each way of combating hypotension: fluids, vasopressors such as noradrenaline and ephedrine, the anticholinergics atropine and glycopyrrolate, and the inotropes dopamine and dobutamine, with a note on bradycardia after medetomidine. It finishes with case scenarios on choosing the right treatment.
