This webinar looks at the blood products most often used in practice: fresh whole blood, stored whole blood, fresh frozen plasma and packed red blood cells. For each one it covers what the product contains, what it is used for, how it is stored and how long it lasts.
It explains how to get each product transfusion ready, including warming in a water bath and how to thaw fragile plasma safely and check it before use. It finishes with the basics of transfusion monitoring: what you need, how often to check the patient, the signs of a transfusion reaction and what to do if you suspect one.
Presented by Samantha Amos as part of the ACVN webinar series.
