This webinar follows a painful stimulus along the pain pathway, from nociceptors in the tissues to the brain. It explains the four steps of transduction, transmission, modulation and perception, the role of inflammatory mediators, A delta and C fibres and the dorsal horn, and how gate theory, wind-up and the NMDA receptor fit into modulation.
It also covers the descending inhibitory pathway and stress-induced analgesia, then looks at the types of pain, including physiological and pathological pain, peripheral and central sensitisation, allodynia, hyperalgesia, and visceral and somatic pain. It finishes with why nociception still occurs in an anaesthetised patient.
