The first triage and treatment a wildlife patient receives can directly affect its chances of survival. This webinar covers what counts as wildlife, the species commonly seen in Australian clinics, and the work health and safety risks of handling them, including venomous snakes, the platypus and Australian bat lyssavirus in flying foxes. It looks at the common reasons wildlife are admitted and what to keep in a wildlife emergency kit.
It then works through triage on admission, from the distance examination to the physical examination and radiographs, and the intensive care orphans need. It finishes with euthanasia, emergency housing and the legal obligations vets have to relieve suffering in sick, injured or orphaned protected animals.
Presented by Kiara Stoboi as part of the ACVN webinar series.
