Understanding the bitch cycle helps you give breeding clients accurate advice and avoid unplanned litters. This webinar covers the four stages of the cycle, pro-oestrus, oestrus, dioestrus and anoestrus, and what it means for a bitch to be a monoestrous, spontaneous ovulator. It explains how the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, ovary and follicles control the cycle through GnRH, FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone, including the feedback loops that start and end it.
It then links each stage to the hormone changes behind it and the behaviour and physical signs owners see, from the bloody discharge of pro-oestrus to standing season, pregnancy and the return to normal in anoestrus. It finishes with why progesterone is monitored to time matings, a pop quiz, and how desexing keeps a bitch in anoestrus.
