This webinar explains when oxygen support is needed and how to recognise the patient that needs it. It covers the difference between hypoxia and hypoxaemia, the four types of hypoxia, the causes of hypoxaemia and impaired oxygen binding, and what abnormal breathing patterns and sounds such as stertor, stridor and wheezing can tell you. It then looks at how gas exchange works, including diffusion across the pulmonary membrane and the ventilation-perfusion ratio.
The second half works through oxygen therapy techniques: flow-by and mask oxygen, home made oxygen hoods, oxygen cages and CO2 build-up, nasal oxygen catheters, high-flow nasal oxygen therapy and transtracheal oxygen delivery. It finishes with the risk of oxygen toxicity from prolonged exposure to high oxygen concentrations.
