This webinar works through the skull, eye, nasal, airway and skeletal differences in brachycephalic patients and what they mean for nursing care. It covers their poor thermoregulation, high vagal tone, gastrointestinal disease and regurgitation risk, impaired ventilation, and why stress can be dangerous, along with low-stress restraint, transport and IV access.
It then sets out an anaesthesia plan, from fasting, sedation and pre-oxygenation to intubation, cutting ET tubes, cuff inflation and monitoring. It finishes with the recovery period, including when to extubate, avoiding stress and overheating, and when patients can safely go home.
Presented by Rhonda Ponder at the 2023 ACVN Nurse Conference.
Includes the full recording (1 hour 26 minutes), the presentation slides as a PDF, and a quiz. Pass the quiz to receive a certificate worth 1 AVNAT point.
