Fluid calculations get much easier when you see them done from start to finish. This short webinar does exactly that.
You’ll calculate a total fluid requirement (TFR) for ‘Squiggle’, an 11-year-old Devon Rex admitted for vomiting who is about 7% dehydrated. You’ll start with maintenance rates, using the formulas 80 x BW(kg) to the power of 0.75 per 24 hours for cats and 132 x BW(kg) to the power of 0.75 for dogs, along with rule-of-thumb hourly rates, then three ways to estimate the fluid deficit: dehydration assessment, packed cell volume (PCV) and weight change.
You’ll then estimate ongoing losses from vomiting or diarrhoea at 4 mL/kg per episode, and add maintenance, deficit and ongoing losses together to give Squiggle’s TFR and hourly rate. The webinar finishes with replacing ongoing losses within 2 to 3 hours, giving up to 25% of the deficit in the first hour for acute losses, and reassessing the patient so the plan can be adjusted.
