A good blood smear lets you confirm, question or add to an analyser result. This webinar builds the skills to make and read one, with practice images to finish.
You’ll start with what a peripheral blood smear is and why we still make one when automated analysers do the complete blood count. You’ll then work through making a smear from an EDTA sample, the features of a good quality smear, staining with Diff-Quik, and using the microscope from the 10x objective through to 100x oil immersion.
The second half covers what to look for: the five types of leukocytes and their normal proportions, band neutrophils and the left shift, toxic change in neutrophils, normal canine and feline erythrocytes, signs of a regenerative response, and abnormalities including hypochromasia, spherocytes, acanthocytes, schistocytes and Heinz bodies. It finishes with platelets, platelet clumping and how to do a manual platelet estimate.
