Drug toxicities can turn a quiet shift into a busy one fast. This webinar gives you the signs, the first aid and the treatment for the cases you are most likely to see.
You’ll start with pharmaceutical toxicities: pyrethrin and permethrin, including why cats are especially at risk and cat-specific signs such as ear flicking and twitching of the cutaneous muscle; paracetamol (acetaminophen), the toxic metabolite NAPQI, methaemoglobinaemia and the stages of toxicity, with treatment including N-acetylcysteine, S-adenosyl methionine, vitamin C and cimetidine; NSAID toxicity and the roles of COX-1 and COX-2; and mectin (macrocyclic lactone) toxicity, the more sensitive breeds and the fact that there is no antidote.
The second half covers illicit drugs: cannabis (THC and CBD), methamphetamine and amphetamines, and cocaine, with the clinical signs, first aid and stabilisation for each. It finishes with treatment, including decontamination and its limits, ion trapping, intravenous lipid emulsion, fluid therapy, seizure control and temperature monitoring.
