Koalas are stoic and secretive patients. This webinar gives you the knowledge to recognise what is wrong and keep them comfortable and safe in your care.
You’ll start with the history of the koala in South Australia, the differences between northern and southern koalas, koala behaviour, diet and pap, their protected status, and zoonotic diseases such as sarcoptic mange, chlamydiosis and koala retrovirus. You’ll then look at why koalas come into the clinic, from dog attacks and car strikes to chlamydiosis, oxalate nephrosis, dental and eye problems, fire and heatwave.
The clinical section shows you how to assess a koala in its carrier, tell a healthy koala from a sick one and read signs of pain and stress. It covers methadone analgesia with cisapride to manage ileus, handling, and sedation with alfaxalone and diazepam. You’ll then work through the hands-on assessment under sedation: body condition scoring over the scapulae, tooth wear to estimate age, dog attack wounds, and normal vital signs and laboratory values. It finishes with recovery and housing, leaf supply, and how to give oral medications through the diastema.
