Operant learning, or trial-and-error learning, uses reward and punishment to make a behaviour more or less likely. This webinar explains the difference between reinforcement and punishment, what “positive” and “negative” mean, and how they combine into the four quadrants: positive reinforcement, positive punishment, negative reinforcement and negative punishment.
Each quadrant is explained with everyday dog examples, including how owners can reinforce unwanted behaviours such as jumping up by accident. It covers why aversive methods and punishing a growl are not recommended, and finishes with why positive reinforcement and redirection are the preferred approach for companion animals.
