AHDS patients need a lot of hands-on nursing. This webinar shows you how to provide it well, from admission to going home.
You’ll start with what acute haemorrhagic diarrhoea syndrome (AHDS) is, why it was previously called haemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) and why these dogs become so dehydrated. You’ll then cover the hands-on care: maintaining IV access and checking catheters, faecal management systems and barrier creams, keeping patients and bedding clean, enrichment for weak and recumbent dogs, and reintroducing food slowly.
You’ll also look at a 2021 Danish study of 237 dogs hospitalised with suspected AHDS, including how many received antimicrobials, the other treatments used and the outcome. The webinar finishes with recovery care: home care on a gastrointestinal diet, transitioning back to the normal diet, and the probiotic and prebiotic supplements that can support gut recovery.
