Veterinary Nursing CPD in Australia: AVNAT Points, Webinars and Certificates

Professional development should do more than tick a box. The right webinar can help you feel more confident with a challenging patient, refresh a skill you haven’t used in a while or introduce a better way of doing something in practice. And if you’re registered with AVNAT, you’ll want that learning properly recorded too.

Here is how AVNAT CPD works, what to look for when choosing recorded veterinary nursing webinars and how VetNurse.Study can help you make the most of your learning time.

How many AVNAT CPD points do veterinary nurses need?

Under the AVNAT Registration Scheme, registered veterinary nurses and veterinary technologists generally need 20 eligible CPD points per annual cycle, running from 1 July to 30 June. Requirements can differ if you register partway through the cycle or have an approved adjustment. Check the latest VNCA AVNAT CPD guidance and CPD Policy for the rules that apply to you.

Rather than scrambling to find points just before renewal, choose learning that fits the patients, procedures and questions you encounter throughout the year.

Do recorded veterinary nursing webinars count towards AVNAT CPD?

Yes, eligible recorded webinars can count towards AVNAT CPD. But simply watching any veterinary video online does not automatically earn points. Eligibility and evidence requirements depend on the activity and current AVNAT rules.

The Australian College of Veterinary Nursing (ACVN) is an AVNAT Education Partner. Our VetNurse.Study library includes 200+ recorded veterinary nursing webinars, with AVNAT CPD recognition available for most of them. You can browse the recorded webinar catalogue by topic and select subjects that matter to your work.

To find out how many AVNAT points a particular webinar offers, check that webinar’s page in Academy. That is also where you’ll find its relevant learning and completion details. Never assume that every webinar offers the same number of points.

How do I get my webinar completion certificate?

Start with the VetNurse.Study webinar catalogue, open the webinar you want in Academy and follow its completion requirements. When the webinar offers a certificate and you have completed the necessary steps, you can download your evidence for your CPD records.

It’s worth keeping your certificates together as you go. Future you will be grateful when AVNAT renewal time comes around.

A useful distinction: some of our older archive pages contain embedded webinar videos. Watching those videos alone does not award AVNAT CPD points or issue a completion certificate. For recognised learning, use the webinar’s page in Academy and complete the required steps.

What if I want to study a topic in more depth?

Recorded webinars are a flexible way to expand your knowledge, but sometimes you’d like to explore a subject beyond a single presentation. ACVN’s veterinary nursing short courses offer more in-depth, structured professional development, with learning materials, activities and educator support. They’re worth exploring when you want to build a deeper understanding of a particular area of patient care.

Which veterinary nursing webinars should I choose?

Think about the situations in which you’d like to feel more prepared. Perhaps you want to understand fluid therapy more confidently, refresh your approach to anaesthesia monitoring, or feel less overwhelmed when a critical patient arrives.

Different workplaces bring different challenges. Nurses in general practice, referral hospitals, shelters, boarding facilities and animal care organisations may all find value in different topics. Choose webinars that relate to your role, support better patient care and stretch your knowledge in a useful direction.

Because the webinars are recorded, you can fit learning around shifts, placements and everything else competing for your time. Explore something new when you have an hour, or revisit a familiar topic when you need a refresher.

What’s the difference between webinar memberships and Study Club?

They’re designed for different kinds of learning.

Webinar memberships give you access to our extensive recorded veterinary nursing webinar library, including topics relevant to ongoing professional development. Browse the webinars and choose the membership that suits you.

VetNurse Study Club is for aspiring, new and student veterinary nurses. It focuses on building practical skills and confidence through a growing skills-video library, live interactive tutorials with ACVN educators and seven-day tutorial replays. It is separate from the recorded CPD webinar library and is not a formal qualification or an assessment-marking service.
